What are pigmented lesions?
Pigmented lesions include age spots, freckles, moles, melasma, and other patchy skin discolorations. These lesions can either be benign or cancerous. At Contours Medical Aesthetics, we specialize in the treatment of benign (noncancerous) lesions. If you have brown spots on your face or body, we can help you improve your overall complexion. Pigmented lesions differ from vascular lesions, which are not caused by sun damage and appear much differently.
What is melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition in which tan brown patches develop on the face. This condition most often forms on the forehead, upper cheeks, and upper lip area, which get a lot of sun exposure. Melasma can also result from hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or from birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy. Sunlight will worsen melasma, no matter what the original cause.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, women are more likely than men to get melasma. Even though sun exposure is a significant cause, hormones also play a role. In fact, melasma is often seen in pregnant women and is occasionally referred to as “the mask of pregnancy.”
What causes pigmented lesions?
Sunlight, the aging process, and hormonal changes can affect the distribution of melanin (color) in our skin. As a result, various pigmented lesions will appear. Generally speaking, these spots mean that you suffer from different degrees of damaged skin. Whether your lesions were caused by sun exposure, genetics, or other factors, the end result is an uneven, blemished skin tone.
